Smith, Roberta “Kay”
Castile-
Roberta K. Smith, age 79 of South Main Street Castile, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at Unity Hospital in Rochester with her beloved family by her side. She was born in Salamanca, August 13, 1946, a daughter of the late Cletus B. and Grace K. Francisco Shoup. Kay was a 1964 graduate of Perry Central School and she went on to earn her nursing license (LPN) from the Rochester School of Practical Nursing in 1965. Kay worked for several years at the Perry Nursing Home which her family owned. After it's closing she began working for Rochester Telephone where she realized that she preferred an office job. She also worked for a time at Robeson Cutlery in Castile, as a server and baker for the Letchworth School and most recently as an Account Representative for Champion Products in Perry until it's closure. An incredibly hard working lady, Kay found time to enjoy family camping trips, bowling, flower gardening and attending Country Jamborees. She served beside her veteran husband in the Castile American Legion and Perry VFW Auxiliaries. Despite leaving nursing many years before, she would always be known to all the kids in town as “The Neighborhood Nurse”. She adored her grandchildren and made a point of making time for them.
Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard in 2013, her baby sister, Donna Jean Shoup, her step-mother and dear friend, Elaine Shoup.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna (Dick Sanford) Diver of Castile, a son, Kenneth (Mary) Smith of LeRoy, a brother, Gene (Cherol) Shoup of Perry, four grandchildren, Allison and Logan Diver, Ashley, and Rachel Smith as well as several nieces, nephews and close friends.
