Richard R.
Errington
Sep 18, 1943 — Oct 6, 2023
Gainesville
Richard R, Errington age, 80 of East Mill Street Gainesville, passed away, at home, Friday October, 6th 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born at home, September, 18th 1943 in DuBois, PA a son of the late Richard Sr. and Dorothy Bedell Errington. Dick graduated from DuBois High School in 1961 but he had already begun his long journey of work, self employment and a lifetime with the railroad. Dick worked for Sarge Hoover's Garage when he was 12. There he learned body work, customer service and sales. Dick owned 21 cars before he was old enough to drive which he eventually turned into his own used car business. When he turned 16 he got his permit and his first car on the road was a 1950 Dodge. Dick had an amazing work ethic that he carried through numerous jobs in his youth. He married the love of his life, Phoebe "Gerry" Cain in 1964 and has been by her side through thick and thin for 59 years. They built a life together and he began his journey with railroading. In 1965 he began as a Signal Helper stringing wire between PA and NY. He built signal systems and maintained them. In 1968 Dick became the youngest foreman the B&O Railroad ever had. He worked for them and later the Chessie System, CSX, and the Rochester and Southern where he retired after 39 years in 2003. He even served his community as Gainesville Mayor for several years. Dick had many talents including inventing new things, loved restoring old cars and still talking about the railroad. His 1931 Ford Model A was his prize possession. Dick rebuilt it from the floor up and painted it. He was a dignified man who loved his family dearly.
Dick was preceded in death by two sons, Steven and Donald Errington.
Survivors include his wife, Gerry of Gainesville, a son, who took up his father's passion and began a career with the railroad, Ronald (Susan) Errington of Warsaw, 2 brothers, John (Patricia) Errington of Painted Post, Gregory Errington of Warsaw, his grandchildren, Jacob (Carolyn) Bukowski, Crystal (Tyler) Paulsen, Tracie, Nathan, Melissa, Hollie, and Danielle Errington, 4 great grandchildren, Robert Mineo, Isabella and Michael Colf, and Knox Paulsen.
