Obituary

Richard C. " Doc" Benn, age 88, of Academy St., Wyoming, passed away Tuesday, June 12th, 2012 at the Waterfront Healthcare Center in Buffalo, NY. He was born in Olean, New York, March 1st, 1924, the son of the late Charles L. and Gladys I. Brewer Benn. Richard was a 1943 graduate of Warsaw High School. A lifetime resident of Wyoming, Richard served his country honorably with the United States Army during WWII, as a tank commander; earning the rank of Sergeant. He fought through Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes Forest, Central Europe, and the Rhineland, returning home in 1945. At the start of the Korean War, "Doc" returned to military service and earned his commission as a First Lieutenant. Doc was proud of his military service and his membership in Varysburg West Star Lodge #413 of the F&AM, Wyoming Lodge #181 of the F&AM in Warsaw and the Royal Arch. He worked as a supervisor for material control at Mallory Timers in Warsaw and later at Robeson Cutlery in Castile. Doc loved his dog, riding his motorcycle, and going out to eat. He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia S. Logel Benn and a son; Richard L. Benn. Survivors include 2 daughters, Toni (Donald) Kibler of Wyoming and Tracey (Steve) Simpson of Tonawanda; 3 grandchildren, Kelly Rosato, Jessamie Kibler, and Spc. Ryan Clark; 2 great grandchildren, Brett and Megan Rosato. Calling hours will be held at the Weeks Funeral Home, 123 N. Main St., Warsaw Thursday, June 14th, 2012 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Masonic services will be held at 7pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home, 10am Friday, June 15th, 2012 with Pastor Douglas Evans of the First Baptist Church of Wyoming as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Wyoming Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made in Doc's name to Wyoming Hook and Ladder at PO Box 36 Wyoming, NY 14591.
