LaVerne F. Sevilla, age 98, of Cheektowaga passed away peacefully, Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. Vern was born in Warsaw, November 8, 1924, the son of the late Frank P. and Fannie Thomas Sevilla. He graduated from Warsaw Central School in 1942 and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, serving with the 8th AF 491st Heavy Bomb Wing as an Armorer on B-24's in Europe until the end of the War returning home in 1945. Vern was awarded the European Theater of Operations Medal with 5 Bronze Battle Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a Silver Star, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Upon returning home, Vern earned a business degree from the University of Buffalo and worked as a Production and Inventory Control Logistics Manager for Gemcor for 25 years before retiring. He was a terrific musician who played the alto saxophone and clarinet in popular swing bands throughout area and for USO shows in the military. He was a member of Walter Klein Post #532 of the American Legion in Warsaw and was a Charter Member of Warsaw's Memorial VFW Post #4823, the Second Air Division Association, the 8th AF, 491st Bomb Group Assoc., Life Member of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, and the American Production and Inventory Control Society, and the American Management Society. Vern was a dedicated father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Nancy Lucas Sevilla.
Survivors include his two sons, Steven (Barbara) Sevilla of Clarence and Randall (Ann) Sevilla of Arizona, 7 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
Friends of LaVerne F. Sevilla may call on Wednesday, August 30th 2023 from 9-11am at the Weeks Funeral Home 123 N. Main Street Warsaw, NY 14569. An American Legion Service will be conducted at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30am at St. Michael's Church in Warsaw with Father Denning Achide as Celebrant.
