John L. Haxton, age 82, of Route 362, Bliss, New York, passed away, Monday, February 28, 2022 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. John was born in Ulysses, P.A., June 17, 1939 a son of the late Joe C. and Irene Cone-Swartwood Haxton. John served his country honorably in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic from 1957 to 1960. After his military service, John worked for the B&O Railroad, and as a carpenter and painter before going to work for the New York State Department of Transportation in both Rush and Warsaw for thirty years retiring in 2001. He was a member of Eagle Memorial Post #1720, a life member of Wiscoy Rod and Gun, and a member of the 1 st US Artillery K Battery North-South Skirmish Association. John was a hard worker and always put his family first. He truly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Haxton, his three sisters, Ruth Cook, Jeanne Greene, Cora Watson, his four brothers, Walter, Charles, William R., and Victor Haxton. Survivors include his beloved wife of sixty one years, Oleava M. Degenfelder Haxton whom he married on August 4 th , 1961. Additional survivors include his two daughters, Dr. Wanda (Carl Jr.) Haxton-Koch of Adamstown, MD; Sarah Drew of Bliss, NY; a son, Leslie (Heidi) Haxton of Ocala, FL, four grandchildren, Ashley Drew of Ypsilanti, MI, Meagan Byrd of Middletown, MD, Steele Drew of Bliss, Justin Koch of North Beach, MD, four great grandchildren, Kellan and Jonah Koch, Sydney and Brooklyn Byrd and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in Lyonsburg Cemetery in the Spring with full military honors. The family has requested no flowers, but would rather you plant a tree in John's name.
