Harry N. Vonglis, age 90, of Orchard St., Silver Springs, died Wednesday, November 24th, 2010, at the Wyoming County Community Hospital. He was born in Rochester, NY, September 7th, 2010, the son of the late Harry and Mabel Roberge Vonglis. He served in the United States Army for 21 years enlisting in 1940 and serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Harry was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Harry was a member of the American Legion in Mt. Morris, former member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars post 4823 in Warsaw, National Aide-De-Camp of the American Legion and served several years as the troop leader for Boy Scout troop 85 in Leicester. He served 10 years on the Fort Drum Retiree Council where he was co-chairman for 2 years and was chosen for the Department of the Army Chief of Staff Retiree Council. Harry enjoyed making candy and worked many years as a clerk at Moran's Hardware in Rochester. He is predeceased by 2 brothers, John and Jim Vonglis. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Ann Newland Vonglis of Silver Springs whom he married on November 26th, 1976; 2 daughters; Vickie (Gerald) Burgess of Charlotte, N.C. and Roxanne (Gerald) Maggio of Rochester; 7 sons, Nick Jr. (Pat) Vonglis of Georgia, Donald Begnouche of Silver Springs, Gerald Vonglis of Silver Springs, Tim Vonglis, Jeff Vonglis, Tony Vonglis and Ronnie Vonglis all of Tennessee; a brother, George (Jean) Vonglis of Arizona; 2 sisters, Mary Vonglis of Canandaigua and Helen Wild of Naples; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Friends of Harry may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Wednesday, December 1st with funeral services held Thursday, December 2nd, at 11 am with Pastor Daryn Duff of Rock Glenn Baptist Church as celebrant at the Weeks Funeral Home 123 N. Main St, Warsaw. Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
