Obituary

Gustav T. Bertrand Sr., age 83 of Silver Lake Road Perry, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, May 16 th 2020. Gus was born in Wuppertal, Germany, August 13 th 1936 the son of the late Gustav and Hilda Sudhoff Bertrand. He attended business school and became a Master Butcher, in Germany. Gus arrived in this country in 1956 first living with his aunt and uncle in Pavilion and in 1966 moving to what would become the family farm in LaGrange. He worked for Charlie Ahl in Warsaw and Rich Plan in Perry as a Master Butcher for several years. Gus later took a job as a hoisting engineer at International Salt Company in Retsof where he worked for fifteen years. Gus was very dedicated to his family and was known as an easy going guy with a terrific sense of humor. He was a longtime member of Mary Immaculate Parish at the St. Mary's site in Pavilion. Gus loved the outdoors, camping with his family, hunting, and fishing, bowling and playing euchre. For many years he enjoyed and was very proud of his farm where he raised crops and animals.

Gus was preceded in death by a brother; Peter Bertrand and his aunt and uncle Joseph and Elizabeth Berkemeyer.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years; Dawn Court Bertrand whom he married in 1958, two daughters; Janet (Karl) Lutz of Eastwood, NY, Sylvia (Larry) Mellin of Perry, a son Gus (Chris) Bertrand Jr. of Pavilion, a sister; Dorothea Nurnberger of Wuppertal, Germany, a brother; Bernhard (Anke) Bertrand of Ruthe , Switzerland, 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11am, Wednesday May 20 th 2020 in LaGrange cemetery with Father Alphonse Arulanandu of St. Mary's Church as officiant.
