Obituary

Gladys M. Derrick, age 99, of Brooklyn Street Warsaw, died Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at the East Side Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Warsaw. Gladys was born September 21st, 1910, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Mary Houser Derrick. A lifetime resident of Wyoming County and a class of 1928 graduate from Warsaw High School, Gladys continued her education at the Teachers College in Geneseo, NY where she earned her degree. She started in a one room schoolhouse in Protection, NY and later became one of the first teachers hired to teach in the newly constructed Wyoming Central School when they opened their doors in 1938-39. Gladys continued her teaching career in Wyoming until 1972 when she retired; a total of 41 years dedicated to teaching. She was a member of the Wyoming County and New York State Retired Teachers Associations, the Warsaw Historical Society, and she volunteered at the Wyoming County Community Hospital. Gladys is preceded in death by her sister; Barbara Derrick and brother, Bernard Derrick. Survivors include 1 sister-in-law; Helen Derrick of Warsaw, 2 nieces; Lynne Crater of Warsaw and Alison Derrick of Burtonsville, MD, 1 grandniece; Katherine Crater of Warsaw as well as several cousins. Friends of Gladys M. Derrick may call Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 from 10am to 12pm at the Weeks Funeral Home 123 N. Main Street Warsaw. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 12pm Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 with Pastor Lauren Turner of Warsaw's United Methodist Church as celebrant. Burial will be conducted privately in the Warsaw Cemetery.
