Fred W. Heller, age 88, of Mt. View Ave., passed away suddenly at home Friday, September 1st, 2017, hours after doing what he loved most, serving others. He was born in Elmira, April 15th, 1929, son of the late Frederick E. and Zylpha M. Straw Heller. Fred was a resident of Warsaw since 1954. He was a graduate of South Side High school, Elmira, and received a B.S. from Ithaca College in 1952. Fred was hired for the new Physiotherapy department at the Wyoming County Community Hospital in 1954 and continued to work there as a dedicated Physical Therapist until 1991. He was a member of the Warsaw Kiwanis Club for 55 years since 1962. He was past Lieutenant Governor of the Genesee Division from 1974-75, was President of the Warsaw Kiwanis Club in 1966, recipient of the 1998 George F. Hixon Award, and 2014 recipient of the Alan Goodenow memorial award for outstanding community service. During his time with the Kiwanis Club, Fred was a champion of many community projects. He was especially dedicated to Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army since 1981. He was an avid historian who published the history of the Warsaw Sanitarium and "History of Warsaw Kiwanis" along with recently completing his own life story. Fred served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. Those who knew and loved him understood him as a student of life and teacher of its history. Fred was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Loretta Baker Heller in 2009; and 2 brothers, Frank and Robert Heller. Survivors include a niece, Laurie H. Gillette of Ithaca; 3 nephews, Rev. Ed (Diane) Heller of Carnegie, PA, Ronald Heller of Carlisle, PA, and Stephen (Susan) Heller of Penn Yan, NY. A celebration of life will take place from 11am to 1pm Saturday, September 16th, 2017 at the United Church Of Warsaw. Burial will take place in the Warsaw Cemetery.
