Erna A. Langdon

November 10, 1944 – March 11, 2022

Erna Ann Langdon, age 77, died Friday March 11 at her home in Asheville, NC after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

Erna was born November 10, 1944 in New York, NY to the late Ernest and Anna Stalzer. Anna's parents and Ernest were immigrants from Gottschee, a German heritage region now part of Slovenia, and came to the U.S. in hopes of a better life. Erna grew up in Queens and Long Island and later graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a degree in Math. After graduating, she took a job as a programmer in New York City and then moved to Maryland to be a high school math teacher. Not too long after, she took an opportunity as a programmer at the Pentagon, where she met the love of her life Norwood (Woody). After marrying in 1969, she and Woody lived briefly in Virginia, then moved to Germany for a year and a half before settling in the Washington D.C. area. They later moved to Houston, TX, then Leesburg, VA, and finally Asheville, NC.

She had numerous jobs over the years, programmer, teacher, jewelry sales, and lastly financial analyst at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), but Erna's favorite roles were wife and Mom. She loved her family deeply and sacrificed much for them. One of the happiest days of her life was bringing home her first child, Matthew. And she was thrilled to later welcome two daughters, Melissa, and Katherine (Kate). Erna always had a love for the water and spent many summers with family swimming and water skiing in the Peconic Bay in Mattituck, NY.

With a big heart, Erna volunteered at schools, community organizations, youth sports, and churches. For over 15 years, she was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church (Leesburg, VA), where she served as an usher and member of the Altar Guild. Because Erna trusted in Jesus as her Savior, we are assured she is now at home with the Lord and reunited with her son Matthew, who passed away in 2015.

Erna is survived by her husband Norwood Langdon, her daughters Melissa (Erik) Thingvoll and Katherine (Steven) Wheat, her brother John (Jean Marie) Stalzer, her brothers-in-law Rodney (Linda) Langdon and Wayne (Debra) Langdon, her sister-in-law Jennifer (Holton) Langdon, grandchildren Sara, Julian, Alyssa, Justin, Jennifer, and Leah, 1 nephew and 6 nieces.

Erna's family would like to thank Dr. Marshall and Dr. Sharafsaleh of Golden Oak Medicine, the providers at MemoryCare, and her Four Seasons Hospice team for their compassionate care of Erna. The family would also like to thank MountainCare Adult Day Program, as well as Brenda Sprouse and her daughters Lily and Lucy for all the love and joy they brought to Erna.

A viewing will be held Friday, March 18 at 10am at First Baptist Church of Wyoming, NY, followed by a funeral service at 11am, officiated by Pastor Doug Evans. Graveside service to follow at Wyoming Cemetery.
