Della Mae Swede, age 94, of Salina St. Warsaw, passed away Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 at the Wyoming County Community Hospital. She was born March 1st, 1917 in Perry, NY the daughter of the late Frank and Lillian Dupaw Hurlburt. A lifetime resident of Genesee and Wyoming County, Della worked on the family farm and at the family business, Swede's Grocery in Pavilion. During World War II, Della was proud of her employment as an inspector for the Buffalo Arms Gun Factory. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and was a former member of the Monday Club both in Pavilion. Della was a terrific mother and grandmother who was kindhearted and very giving of herself. She always placed others needs ahead of her own. Della was a great Euchre player and cook, "Known best for her apple pie." She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Robert Swede, who passed away August 5th, 1990; 5 brothers, Mylo, Lynn, William, Charles, and Austin Hurlburt; 2 sisters, Grace Conway and June Cofield; and a loving daughter-in-law, Diana Swede. Survivors include a daughter, Darlene (Daniel) Smykowski of Darien; 3 sons, Darryl Swede, Gary (Sharon) Swede and Douglas (Nancy) Swede all of Pavilion; a sister, Katherine Hamilton of Leicester; 2 sisters-in-law, Shirley Dewitt of St. Petersburg, FL and Rita Hurlburt of Warsaw; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Friends of Della may call Friday, April 8th from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Weeks Funeral Home 123 N. Main St. Warsaw. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am, Saturday, April 9th at St. Mary's Church in Pavilion with Father Richard Cilano as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in York. Memorial contributions may be made in Della's name to the Wyoming County Office of the Aging at 8 Perry Ave. Warsaw, NY 14569.
