David Raymond Hawley, 82, of Warsaw, died Saturday, November 11, 2023 following a short illness at Wyoming County Community Hospital. Born on Thursday, October 16, 1941 in Warsaw, he was the son of the late Mildred Estelle (Gay) and the late Waldo Milo Hawley.
He was a devoted member of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) for over seventy years rising from Cub Scout to Eagle Scout, Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow, and serving as Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster in Arcade from 1964-1999. David also earned the Order of the Arrow (OA) Founders Award (1986), the OA Test of Time Award (2013), BSA District Award of Merit (1973), and BSA Silver Beaver Award (1975). The Arcade Masonic Lodge honored David with the Douglas MacArthur Award for Service to Youth, partly in recognition of his work to help 33 Scouts in his troop earn their Eagle Badges. Among other awards he was honored with the BSA's James E. West Fellowship Award (2009) and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution / BSA Robert E. Burt Award for service to Scouting (2014).
He served honorably in the the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict and was in-country for one tour at the Army Administrative Command at Long Binh after which he returned to the Pioneer School system where he resumed teaching fourth and fifth grade for 34 years. He retired in 1999.
David was also a Compatriot of the Rochester Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution with proved lineages connecting him to five Revolutionary War Patriots including one Minute Man and a POW.
David is survived by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Clarke and her husband Stephan Paul Clarke of Churchville, his niece, Erin Elizabeth Clarke (Gregory Hartman) of Fairport, and several cousins.
Friends of David R. Hawley may call on Thursday, November 16, 2023 from 4-6pm at the Weeks Funeral Home 123 N. Main Street Warsaw, NY 14569. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 11am, Friday, November 17, 2023 with the Reverend Timothy Bucknam as officiant. Military honors will follow the service at the funeral home. Burial will be private in the Warsaw Cemetery. Please visit www.weeksfuneral.com to offer condolences, send cards, gifts or to plant a tree in David's name. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in David's name to your local Scout Troop, Veteran's Group or the donors choice.
