Daniel James Murtha, age 65, of Route 20A., Warsaw, passed away Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 in Gainesville, NY. He was born in Warsaw, February 13th, 1946, the son of the late Kenneth S. and Mary E. Sauer Murtha. A lifetime resident of Wyoming County, Daniel was self-employed as a construction supervisor and was known as a jack of all trades. He served our country honorably with the United States Marine Corp. in Vietnam from 1963 to 1968. Daniel served as a Platoon Sergeant and was severely wounded by sniper fire during his tour in Vietnam. He fought on the infamous Hamburger Hill. Danny enjoyed life and outdoors and loved helping his fellow veterans in any way he could, including advocating for their rights. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W of Warsaw Post #4823, the Marine Corps. League of Holley, the Am Vets of Jackson, NJ Post #2, and the NRA. Daniel was a National Representative for the D.A.V and was also a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America LeRoy Chapter #193, the D.A.V. of Livingston and Genesee Counties, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #560, and the Walter Klein American Legion Post #532 and the Wyoming County Vets Club. He was predeceased by his brother, David Murtha. Daniel is survived by his loving companion, Pamela Slocum of Warsaw. Other survivors include 2 sons, Jason D. and Jesse L. Murtha; a daughter, Jenna Murtha; 7 sisters, Mary (Jacob) Weber of Pavilion, Margaret (Wilson) Parmerter of Gainesville, Monica Sikes of Florida, Madeline Beach of Warsaw, Jean (Walter) Vincent of West Bloomfield, Maureen Waterrose of Colorado and Kathleen Murtha of Silver Springs; 4 brothers, Kenneth (Dorothy Howard) Murtha of Warsaw, Robert Murtha of Georgia, Gerald (Pamela) Murtha of Ohio, John Murtha of Warsaw; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11am, Monday, May 23rd at the Wyoming County Vets Club in Warsaw. Memorial contributions may be made in Daniel's name to the P.T.S.D Clinic C/O the Batavia V.A. Medical Center at 222 Richmond Ave. Batavia, NY 14020 or the military organization of choice. Semper Fi!!!
